valve cover gasket leak?

HI. i just bought a 98 audi a6 2.8L engine and i noticed the car has a oil leak. Most of the time, when the air is on, i can smell the oil burning smell inside car. there is also some oil smoke coming from the engine. I did some research and apparently its a very common problem, oil leaking from the passenger side valve cover gasket onto the engine exhaust.
Now, is this a serious problem? like what are chances of a fire? I plan to change those gaskets, its very easy work, but don't have the parts yet. but i need to go out of town and need to drive the car over 1000 miles. Freeway only....... should i change before i go , or i can take my chances?

Kristian, I would say don't wait, but that will have to be your call. The oil is obviously dripping onto the exhaust manifold, hence the burned oil smell.

I don't know how much is dripping, and yes it possibly can catch fire, the wind from interstate speeds can actually make it more likely.

I would be afraid to give you the go-ahead on the trip without fixing the leak, it could be a terribly costly experience.
